Fixing up the house for the wedding?
My boyfriend and I got engaged recently. His people are both in real estate and held at the house of his grandfather of the pound sterling, Illinois. His grandfather left home to my fiancee in his will. This is one of these old Victorian homes and they want us to fix it, so that we can have my bridal shower and rehearsal dinner there. The house literally 100 years and this is not what I want for any type of marriage. It is a very old house. My BF has strongly expressed that it is very important to them. He literally grew up in the house and all he talks about is how they do not make houses like that. He even said that we should go in after it has settled. I am a city girl and always thought of us who live in downtown Chicago in a condo chic. How do I explain to my wife's parents and fiancee of what I want without hurting their feelings?
I guess it would be really important to cover this and many other areas before getting married. Many religious leaders and counselors can provide advice before the wedding when it can be discussed and worked alongside other questions. Often, compromises can be found. Perhaps the bridal shower can be held if you want, but the rehearsal dinner or reception could be at home. The trick is that you both need to compromise. To put things or "fair fight" to try to stick to your feelings about the prospect. People tend to try to convince the other person they are "right." Nobody is good or bad – it is to take each other's feelings into consideration.
